What Are the Benefits of Acupressure - important pressure points to heal yourself

Acupressure is often called acupuncture without the needles. Instead of needles, acupressure involves the application of manual pressure (usually with the fingertips) to specific points on the body.

 

 

What Does Acupressure Do?

Acupressure unblocks meridians using gentle yet firm pressure on specific points along the energy lines, called acupoints. In response to the pressure, the brain oozes endorphins, chemicals that muffle pain signals and invite pleasurable feelings. In the absence of pain, muscles relax and blood flows more freely. As tension recedes, the body finds balance.

Along with its ability to help treat variety of ailments, patients experience additional benefits of acupressure massage. It's a deeply relaxing experience.

 

 

What is an acupressure point?

 

An acupressure point, often called a pressure point, can be defined as a point on the body to which pressure is applied (as in acupressure or reflexology) for therapeutic purposes.

Below I will introduce some commonly used acupuncture points for your reference.

(Note: If you are pregnant, consult a medical expert before using acupressure, since some acupoints may cause the uterus to contract.)

 

 

Acupressure Points for Skin Problems

Sea of Blood

These points cleanse the blood and nourish the skin. To find these two points, sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Feel for a bulge in your thigh muscles about two thumb widths above the top edge of your knee. The bulge is on the top inside portion of the leg. Press on the points firmly with your thumbs or the knuckle of your middle finger.

Acupressure Points for Restful Sleep

Neiguan

Neiguan, or Inner Gate, is one of the best points to press for sleep and relaxation. This point is also called P6 or Pericardium 6. To find the Neiguan point, place 3 fingers at the base of the wrist and feel for a natural depression. There is a depression between the tendons in the hand that can be an effective insomnia cure. Press this point, applying steady pressure until you feel stress start to melt away and you get more relaxed. If you would like to sleep like a baby into the night, try to keep continuous pressure on the point by taping a kidney bean onto it.

 

 

Acupressure Points for toothaches

Stomach 6(ST6)

The ST6 pressure point is typically used to relieve mouth and tooth ailments. To find this point, you should clench your teeth together naturally. It’s located halfway between the corner of your mouth and the bottom of your earlobe. It’s the muscle that flexes when you press your teeth together.

Acupressure Points for Menstrual Cramps

Three Yin Meeting (Sp 6)

 Applying pressure to this point nourishes energy flow to the spleen, liver, and kidney meridians. It is also good for treating menstrual pain. The three meridians of the leg cross at this point on the inside of the leg above the anklebone. To find it, press your thumb into the center of your anklebone, then slide up the inner leg four finger widths. The point is just off the shinbone (tibia), toward the back of the leg.

 

 

Acupressure Points for constipation treatment

Abdomen Point

Just below the belly button, at about 3 centimeters down, abdomen point is found. Massage for 2 minutes and two times in a day.

Abdomen point is known for constipation treatment. Also, the digestive system is strengthened by the activity of applying pressure. Use two fingers for massaging around the pressure point. Abdomen point works well for controlling belly fat too.

 

On the whole, it not only has the importance in acupressure points for weight loss but also for many related issues.

Acupressure Points for Weight Loss

Elbow Point

This is the large intestine point, which is found on the inner side of the elbow crease towards the end.

 

When the idea is to lose weight, acupressure on this point helps in stimulating the intestinal function by removing excess heat and unwanted moisture from the body.

 

You have to press this point with your thumb for 2 minutes every day for best results.

Acupressure Points for vomiting

The Pericardium

The Pericardium (P6) acupressure point is considered useful for getting rid of nausea and vomiting caused by a variety of reasons including motion sickness, pregnancy, post-surgery and post-chemotherapy. It also relieves upset stomach, headaches, chest pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome pain and discomfort. It is located between the two large tendons on the inside of your wrist, about three finger-widths below the base of your palm.

It's more effective to moxibustion on these acupressure points.

Using moxa or other medicines to burn and warm ironing on acupoints on the body surface, through the heat of moxibustion fire and the role of medicines, through the transmission of meridians and collaterals, to warm and ventilate blood and achieve the effect of treating diseases.
